FM Talk is not “the next big thing” in radio.

The “next big thing” in radio is the gradual disappearance of music stations to be replaced by non-music stations, whether they are Talk, Sports, or new formulas yet to be devised.

The fact is that music stations will increasingly be at a competitive disadvantage regardless of their legendary status in the radio industry. That, obviously, is due to the rise of the Internet and the plethora of music distribution options it makes available in our homes, workplaces, and cars. As I always like to say “heritage” is worthless unless it adds value to the audience. Otherwise, “heritage” represents “old radio stations.”

I’m not saying all music stations will eventually disappear. I am saying that this trend is inexorable.

So if you’re in the radio industry, I recommend the following…

As we have seen from various 3rd party research studies, the future of Digital Audio is bright. As more consumers continue to migrate towards listening to audio through computers & mobile devices, the opportunities for advertisers are enormous…Pre Roll Video, In Stream Audio, Companion Banners, and evolving In Stream Video inventory can all be activated and customized for a Local or National Advertiser. The growth of audio mobile applications such as Pandora, IHeart Radio, CBS/AOL and others is fueling this trend and it will only accelerate…The idea of marrying terrestrial radio placement with a strategic digital audio program to create a true “Audio” experience is a concept which is resonating with many large & small Ad Agencies around the country.

Very successful product/brands have established successful channels of distribution for those products/brands.

Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, social media sites in general are channels of distribution for your messages. Ways that you, your brand or product can connect directly with your audience. Get it?

Here’s a real life great example…

I’m starting to think that at the end of the day what will be the most common way of getting digital music will be some new version of radio. Push a button. Get some good songs. Pay no money. Maybe hear some ads. Sure, people will buy downloads, use social networks and get music lots of other ways. But good enough and easy may well dominate.

First, one or more major radio groups are likely to default on their debt obligations. This, sadly, will not be a surprise. And it’s hardly news.

Second, the Radio Advertising Bureau will likely vanish. If that happens it may not make a big difference to your bottom line, but it sends a very bad signal to our agency friends on Madison Avenue. I’m hoping this prediction is wrong, for the record.

It continues to amaze me that some in the radio industry have not embraced digital. Terrestrial radio is a distribution system. Broadcasters have years of experience developing great content. One can argue that this content has been homogenized in recent years but I believe we still have the ability to attract listeners as evidenced by 92% of the population using radio on a weekly basis. Why would any broadcaster shun streaming their station and developing an effective sales strategy?
